We want to make sure that students get the most out of their time with us. Here, we have answered some frequently asked questions. If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact Jennifer Peden at 319-533-5906.
Where is your main office located?
Our office is located at 2730 12th St SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404. Our new facility is located between Wilson Ave. SW and 33rd Ave SW. The building is secured so all visitors are required to check in at the front door. Just ring the bell and notify AAS staff you are there to do ride time.
What time do I need to be ready to start my shift?
Ideally, students need to be checked in and ready to go 10 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled shift. This allows us to ensure you’re partnered with the correct team and you won’t get left behind if high call volume requires your truck to hit the streets a few minutes early!
What do I do if I can’t make the shift I signed up for?
If you need to cancel or reschedule a shift, please try to do so at least 48 hours before your shift by calling our administrative office at 319-366-2300. If you are running late for your scheduled shift, please call our 24hr dispatch center at 319-366-7654 to notify your crew. If possible, they may wait for you to arrive; however, call volume may require them to leave without you. If you are not present at the start of your shift and we have not heard from you, the crew will leave the office without you and you will be considered a no-call, no-show for that shift.
What do I need to wear?
We prefer to have students wear black or navy blue slacks / EMS pants. We also encourage students to wear black boots. Students are required to wear the shirt that was issued to them by their educational institution. An ID badge must also be worn and displayed at all times. Students without their ID badge will not be allowed to ride. Dress appropriately for the weather as no additional outerwear will be provided. No garments identifying other services or agencies are permitted to be worn during ride time. Area is not responsible for ruined articles of clothing during ride time.
What do I need to bring?
We encourage all students to bring study material as you may experience some down time. We also encourage students to bring cash or a credit/debit card with them for any snacks or meals. Students may also bring their own snacks or meals if preferred. Please keep in mind that refrigerators and microwaves are not always accessible so do not count on having these amenities available to you.
All students must complete an Area Ambulance Service Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement.
Please download, print, and return completed form to Area Ambulance Service on or before your first day of ride time.
What will I be able to do?
Students will operate under AAS protocols with the direct supervision of an experienced paramedic. We encourage students to be as hands-on as possible. Students will have opportunities to perform patient assessments, start IV’s, administer medications, and practice various other skills required of a medic.
Am I allowed to bring my cell phone or laptop?
Yes. We just ask that your electronic devices do not become a distraction. Cell phones must be set to silent while in the truck and use of any electronic devices in the presence of our patients is strictly prohibited. We also insist that all students adhere to the same strict HIPAA requirements that our medics follow.
Do you have WiFi I can connect to?
We do have WiFi available at our Marion post and at our main office. To get connected just ask one of our medics to help you.
