Your Ride Time Questions, Answered
We want to make sure that students get the most out of their time with us at Area Ambulance Service. Find answers to frequently asked questions below, or download our one-page doc above. If you have other questions, contact Taryn Dugan at (319) 366-2300 ext 204.
Where is your main office located?
Our office is located at 2730 12th St SW in Cedar Rapids, between Wilson Avenue and 33rd Avenue SW. The building is secured so all visitors are required to check in at the front door. Just ring the bell and notify AAS staff you are there to do ride time.
When do I need to be ready to start my shift?
Students need to be checked in and ready to go 15 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled shift. This ensures you won’t get left behind if high call volume requires your crew to hit the streets early.
What if I can’t make my ambulance shift?
If you need to cancel or reschedule a shift, please try to do so at least 48 hours before your shift by calling our administrative office at (319) 366-2300. If you are running late for your scheduled shift, please call our 24-hour dispatch center at (319) 366-7654 to notify your crew. If possible, they may wait for you to arrive; however, call volume may require them to leave without you.
If you are not present at the start of your shift and we have not heard from you, the crew will leave the office without you and you will be considered a no-call, no-show for that shift.
What do I need to wear?
We prefer students to wear black or navy blue slacks / EMS pants, along with black boots. Students are required to wear the shirt that was issued to them by their educational institution. An ID badge must also be worn and displayed at all times. Students without their ID badge will not be allowed to ride.
Dress appropriately for the weather as no additional outerwear will be provided. No garments identifying other services or agencies are permitted to be worn during ride time. We are not responsible for ruined articles of clothing during ride time.
What paperwork do you require?
All students must complete an AAS Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement, available above. Please download, print, and return the completed form on or before your first day of ride time.
What else should I bring?
We encourage all students to bring study material as you may experience some downtime. You may also want to bring cash or a credit/debit card for snacks or meals. You may bring your own snacks or meals if preferred, but keep in mind that refrigerators and microwaves are not always accessible while on duty.
What will I be able to do on duty?
Students will operate under AAS protocols with the direct supervision of an experienced paramedic. We encourage students to be as hands-on as possible. Students will have opportunities to perform patient assessments, start IVs, administer medications, and practice the other skills within their scope of practice.
Am I allowed to bring a cell phone or laptop?
Yes. We just ask that your electronic devices do not become a distraction. Cell phones must be set to silent while in the truck and use of any electronic devices in the presence of our patients is strictly prohibited. All students must also adhere to the same strict HIPAA requirements that our field staff providers follow.
Do you have WiFi I can connect to?
We do have WiFi available at all of our physical locations. To get connected just ask one of our medics to help you.
